Organizations for Communication Professionals

There are many organizations available to Communication Professionals, some of which include:

1.  The Society for Technical Communication www.stc.org.

STC is “the world's largest and oldest professional association dedicated to the advancement of the field of technical communication. The Society’s members span the field of the technical communication profession and reach across every industry and continent. In fact, the Society has members in almost 50 countries and is continuing to grow rapidly outside of North America and Europe” (STC.org).  The intended audience is technical communicators in various fields, as well as professionals, organizations or companies who are impacted by technical communication.

2.  The Association for Women in Communications www.womcom.org.

This organization targets women in the communication field as the intended audience and provides opportunities for education, networking and building connections with other women in the communications sector.

3.  The National Communication Association www.natcom.org

NCA is a non-profit organization that advocates for the advancement of communication in all forms.  The target audience includes scholars, teachers and practitioners and the NCA words to support “their professional interests in research and teaching” (Natcom.org) by providing online resources, events and interest groups for open discussions on industry topics.

4.  Association of Writers & Writing Programs www.awpwriter.org.

The AWP “provides community, opportunities, ideas, news, and advocacy for writers and teachers” (AWPwriter.org).  They help develop educational programs, conferences and workshops and their target audience includes writers and educators.

5.  Media Communications Association - International www.mca-i.org.

The MCA-I provides educational opportunities, networking and informational resources for media communication professionals.  Their target audience includes professionals in advertising, marketing, public relations, creative services and multimedia services.

I would be interested in joining the Association for Women in Communications, however I would expect to receive a great deal of networking and relationship opportunities through this membership.  I have participated in women-only organizations in the past and was often disappointed at how few opportunities there were to connect, especially when seeking to connect with women in higher positions.

I am also interested in the Society for Technical Communication as they have local chapters near to me and this could provide some good educational and networking opportunities.
